Cameron ISD Sports Update: Yoemen 7-0 and No. 5 in the State, Yoe Boys Win District Cross Country Title
It is a good fall to be a Yoemen fan.
Cameron, TX - It is a good fall to be a Yoemen fan. Cameron's football team is unbeaten and climbing the state poll, the Yoe boys cross country team brought home a district championship on its home course, the Lady Yoe volleyball team is deep into a playoff push, and the team tennis season just wrapped up a postseason run. Here is where every Cameron ISD fall sport stands.
Football: 7-0, first place, and ranked fifth in Texas
The Yoemen are 7-0 overall and 4-0 in District 12-3A Division I, alone in first place, and this week they moved up to No. 5 in the Class 3A Division I state rankings. It has been a decade-plus kind of season: Cameron started 5-0 for the first time since 2013, and beat Franklin for the first time since 2021.
The road to 7-0:
- Teague — W 21-14
- Whitney — W 62-61
- Salado — W 38-23
- at McGregor — W 46-9
- Franklin — W 48-47 (OT)
- at Rockdale — W 65-28
- Troy — W 40-26
Sophomore quarterback Kourtlyn Townsend has been the story of the season. He has thrown 31 touchdown passes, and his 625-yard passing performance in the wild 62-61 win over Whitney landed him in the Texas record conversation statewide. His top targets are seniors Javarius Johnson (113 receiving yards a game, 12 touchdowns) and Dallen Wilcox (78 yards a game, 10 touchdowns). On defense, senior Gabriel Cerros averages nearly 14 tackles a game and junior Jamarcus Legrand leads the team with six sacks.
Three teams — Franklin, Lorena, and Little River Academy — sit one game back at 3-1, which makes this Friday the biggest test left: Cameron travels to Little River Academy on Friday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. The Yoemen then go to Caldwell on October 30 and close the regular season at home against Lorena on November 6.
Cross country: Yoe boys are district champions
Cameron hosted the District 19-3A meet on Monday, October 12, at Cameron Junior High — and the home team took the varsity boys title, scoring 42 points to runner-up Little River Academy's 85. All six Yoe varsity boys advance to regionals:
- Steven Marquez III — 3rd, 16:17.37
- Esteban Luna — 5th, 16:38.85
- Ignacio Castillo — 8th, 16:50.83
- Adrian Vargas — 10th, 17:17.19
- Vicente Sanchez — 16th, 18:01.88
- Benjamin Marquez — 27th, 19:30.88
The Lady Yoe placed sixth as a team, led by Bethany Merryman, whose seventh-place finish in 12:53.29 qualifies her for regionals as an individual. Olivia Van Cleave (17th), Tiara Reducindo (24th), Crystal Reyes (28th), and Galilee Sandlin (38th) rounded out the Lady Yoe scoring.
The Region III championships are Monday and Tuesday, October 26-27, at Kate Barr Ross Park in Huntsville.
Volleyball: Lady Yoe in the playoff hunt
The Lady Yoe took a 26-14 overall record into Tuesday night's District 19-3A home match against Lexington, one of the district's top teams. District standings are certified Tuesday, October 27, and the top four teams in 19-3A advance to the playoffs, splitting into Division I and Division II brackets by enrollment. Bi-district matches run October 29-31, and the state finals are November 19-21 at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.
Team tennis: postseason run complete
Cameron Yoe's fall team tennis season ended in the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs, where the Yoemen fell to Bellville, 17-2. Because UIL team tennis has no 3A conference, Cameron competes up in the Class 4A bracket — making the playoff berth itself an accomplishment for the program.
