Rockdale Mayor Ward Roddam Joins Volunteer Crews to Support Local Seniors

CAMERON & ROCKDALE, TX — A powerful wave of neighborly support swept through Milam County as the Milam County Mission successfully mobilized volunteer crews for its "Lend a Hand, Mow a Yard" days. The dual-city initiative revitalized 23 homes belonging to local senior citizens, ensuring they can live with dignity and peace of mind. The event was met with overwhelming community praise, highlighted by the active participation of Rockdale Mayor Ward Roddam on the ground and an official municipal recognition for event organizer Jillian Morris by the City of Cameron.

Milam County Mission focuses heavily on serving senior citizens within the community, providing critical support during their end-of-life journey. By taking care of physically demanding property maintenance, the organization allows vulnerable seniors to focus on their health and comfort. Operating simultaneously, the volunteer teams dedicated a combined 5 hours of intensive labor to assist these residents with essential lawn care.

Rockdale Mobilizes with Mayoral Support

In Rockdale, operations kicked off early at 7:30 AM as a team of 10 dedicated volunteers gathered at Wolf Park. Among those rolling up their sleeves was Rockdale Mayor Ward Roddam, who joined the crew as a hands-on volunteer for the duration of the event. Working alongside the Mayor with exceptional speed and coordination, the team completed 16 senior homes in just 2.5 hours, wrapping up by 10:00 AM.

Following their shift, volunteers were welcomed at St. Thomas Episcopal Church for a celebratory lunch. The lunch area was beautifully coordinated and set up by community volunteer Carolyn Shirley, featuring 8 pizzas completely donated by the local Rockdale Domino's.

Cameron Turnout Drives Significant Impact

At the same time in Cameron, a robust contingent of 14 volunteers staged their operations at All Saints Episcopal Church. The team spent 2.5 hours clearing overgrowth and mowing lawns for 7 local senior properties  before returning to the church grounds to share fellowship over lunch.

Because of the deep, immediate impact of these efforts on the lives of local seniors, the City of Cameron formally recognized Jillian Morris for her exceptional leadership and organizational efforts during an official presentation at City Hall at 9:30 AM.

"This entire project was about looking out for our senior neighbors, especially those navigating their end-of-life journey who may no longer have the capacity to maintain their properties," said Morris. "To see people in both Rockdale and Cameron step up—from our local youth to City Mayors—shows the true heart of our towns. The recognition from City Hall is a testament to every single volunteer who brought a mower, a weed trimmer, or a helping hand."

A True Community-Backed Effort

The entire initiative was heavily subsidized by a network of generous local business sponsors, allowing Milam County Mission to maximize its impact while keeping direct out-of-pocket operational costs to a bare minimum. Key contributors included:

 Domino’s Pizza (Rockdale & Cameron): Supported volunteer lunches in both cities. The Rockdale location donated all 8 pizzas entirely, while the Cameron location provided a generous buy-one-get-one-free match for every pizza purchased.

 VP'z Residential & Commercial Cleaning: Donated drinking water and operational snacks to keep crews fueled.

 R.I.S.E.: Donated supplementary cases of drinking water.

 Brett’s Lawn Service & Cameron Small Engine: Contributed critical hardware and equipment supplies, including 2-stroke fuel and weedeater string.

With a highly successful, safe, and efficient double-header in the books, Milam County Mission is already looking ahead. Backed by strong municipal relationships and deep community goodwill, plans are underway to establish the senior clean-up days as a recurring seasonal tradition.
