Rockdale Prepares to Bring the Heat: Inaugural Taco Fest Set for May 2nd
This Saturday, May 2nd, the Rockdale Community Market, in partnership with the City of Rockdale, will host the town’s first-ever Taco Fest at Wolf Park.
ROCKDALE, TX – Clear your calendars and bring your appetite: Rockdale is officially preparing for a sizzle like no other. This Saturday, May 2nd, the Rockdale Community Market, in partnership with the City of Rockdale, will host the town’s first-ever Taco Fest at Wolf Park. From 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the community is invited to a day packed with nonstop food, music, and activities designed for the whole family.
A Schedule Bursting with Flavor
The festivities kick off at 9:50 AM with opening announcements, followed by a marathon of entertainment. Music will be the heartbeat of the park all day long, featuring a diverse lineup including Charlie Weyler, the vibrant Mariachi Capitál & Folklorico Dancers, the Red Dirt Ramblers, and Burning Low.
For those looking for action beyond the taco stands, the schedule is relentless:
- 11:00 AM: The high-stakes Chihuahua & Cousins Races (open to all small breeds) and a tranquil Bonsai Demonstration by the Austin Bonsai Society.
- 12:00 PM: The Pinewood Derby races begin (hosted by Meadowbrook Baptist Church), alongside the official kick-off of the Taco Contest.
- 12:30 PM: A high-energy Karate and Board Breaking demonstration by Guru Jason.
- All Day: Free face painting by Wavey Potato, Human Slot Machine games, and the Piñata Grab Wagon Pasear walk-about.
Culture and Craft
Taco Fest isn't just about the food; it’s a celebration of local skill and history. Attendees can visit the Rutabaga Patch to watch Manning Custom Leather create beautiful leatherwork, or head to the Train Depot for tours hosted by the Rockdale Historical Society and a live Blacksmithing Demo at 1:00 PM.
A Fundraiser with a Twist: "Get Me Out of Jail!"
One of the most anticipated events is the "Get Me Out of Jail!" fundraiser. Throughout the day, prominent community members—including Chief Meadors, Shannon Kornegay, and Daniel Willie—will be "locked up" for charity. Festival-goers are encouraged to visit the jail cell and donate toward their bail to help them secure their "freedom."
The Main Event: The Taco Contest
The search for the best taco in town reaches its peak in the afternoon. Contestants will begin their prep at noon, with official judging at 3:00 PM. The winners will be crowned at 3:45 PM, walking away with bragging rights and cash prizes of up to $700 for first place.
