- The Milam County Railroad Museum: Step inside to escape the midday summer heat and explore the intricate, scale-model layouts of "Old Town Cameron." Watching the model trains glide through miniature historic streets is a nostalgic treat for all ages.
- Hours: Thursday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
- The Milam County Historical Museum: Located right next door in a beautifully preserved historic building, this stop lets you dive deep into our county’s pioneer days through an extensive collection of artifacts.
- Hours: Thursday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- The Rockdale I&GN Depot Museum: For a fantastic weekend afternoon trip, head to Rockdale’s beautifully restored 1906 International & Great Northern Passenger Station. Complete with a vintage dining car and caboose on the grounds, it is a fascinating, air-conditioned step back into early Texas transit history.
Hours: Saturdays 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sundays 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
🍉 Fresh & Local: Our Weekend Community Markets
Nothing says summer like fresh, locally grown produce, and you can jumpstart your weekend staycation by supporting area growers, bakers, and artisans across the county.
- The Cameron Farmers Market at Lions Centennial Park: Make it a weekend tradition to head out and browse the local stalls. Conveniently located right at Cameron Lions Centennial Park, the market runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (weather permitting). It’s the perfect spot to pick up farm-fresh ingredients for a summer cookout, grab homemade baked goods, and chat with neighbors.
- The Rockdale Community Market at Wolf Park: Double the weekend fun by checking out the vibrant market scene over in Rockdale. Hosted at Wolf Park, this community gathering spot features fantastic local vendors, handmade crafts, and seasonal treats. Choosing to shop at either of our local markets keeps your grocery dollars circulating right within our county lines—and saves you a hot highway drive to an out-of-town big box store.
🌳 Connect with Nature in Our Local Parks & Historic Trails
When the weather clears and you need a breath of fresh air, skip the crowded state parks. Our municipal parks and hidden nature paths offer incredible amenities right under our noses.
- Wilson-Ledbetter Park: This 25-acre jewel is an absolute must-visit for a local day out. Take a walk across the historic Brushy Creek iron bridge (originally built in 1910 and relocated here from Salty) or explore the Frances Nabours Bird Sanctuary. Boasting a beautiful 4-acre lake nestled between the Blackland Prairie and Post Oak Savannah ecoregions, it's a paradise for spotting migrating birds and enjoying a picnic under the live oaks.
- Cameron Park & Hike and Bike Trail: Need to cool down on a blazing July afternoon? Cameron Park features a fantastic city pool and a dedicated children's splash pool ($5.00 admission). The pool area connects directly to the 2.6-mile paved Hike and Bike Trail that rolls all the way to Ben Milam Elementary School. The park also features a basketball court, horseshoe pits, and a sand volleyball court.
- Orchard Park: For a quiet morning jog or evening stroll, head to 6th Street. This beautiful park features an ADA-compliant asphalt walking track completely shaded by towering pecan trees, some over 70 years old (three full laps equals just over a mile). While you walk, look up to spot the "Mayor's Mansion"—a massive, 3-story, 26-apartment purple martin birdhouse installed to welcome colonies migrating all the way from Brazil.
- Cameron Lions Centennial Park: Located on East 4th Street, this vibrant space recently saw major upgrades. It’s a prime spot for a friendly weekend match, boasting a brand-new gazebo and 8 dedicated pickleball courts, alongside a fully refreshed playground for the kids. Pop by on the weekend to enjoy the park amenities and grab your fresh produce all in one trip!
- O.J. Thomas Park: A wonderful neighborhood hub on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave featuring basketball goals, a modern playscape, swings, and a spacious covered pavilion for family gatherings.
- Walk the Rancheria Grande (Gause): Tucked away on FM 2095 in Gause, this quiet preserve lets you walk along the actual historic paths of the El Camino Real trail network. It's a peaceful morning escape where you can step exactly where early travelers and Spanish explorers walked centuries ago.
Hours: Open daily from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
💑 The Ultimate Historic Date Night: Rainbow Courts
If you want to turn your staycation into a truly special overnight escape or a romantic historic date, look no further than Rockdale’s own Rainbow Courts.
Established in 1918, this local landmark is widely recognized as the oldest continuously operating motel in the entire state of Texas. Stepping past the bustling highway into its lush, central courtyard feels like discovering a hidden oasis. Still operating with incredible care, it is a living piece of Texas history.
- The Date Vibe: Relaxing in the comfortable Adirondack chairs on the manicured lawn under the evening summer sky feels a world away from corporate hotel chains.
- A Brush with Fame: The property features beautiful historic cottages where legendary figures have stayed. You can book a stay in the very room where country music icon Bob Wills slept, or the cottage signed for by legendary playwright Tennessee Williams in the 1940s.
- Local Tip: Pair an evening stroll through the Rainbow Courts grounds with a dinner out, or book an overnight weekend "mini-vacation" to totally reset without using a single gallon of highway gas.
🍽️ Turn Mealtime into a Staycation Destination
A true vacation is defined by great food, and you can treat your tastebuds to a culinary getaway right here in town. Turn lunch or dinner into a dedicated outing.
- J.P. Werner Cafe | Old-school comfort in historic Dutchtowne | Texas-sized breakfast plates or a fresh lunch |
- Ginno's Italian Restaurant | Warm, cozy, and romantic | Shared thin-crust pizzas and classic pasta dishes |
- El Charro, Lupita’s, or Los Comales | Lively, vibrant, and festive | Sizzling fajita platters and authentic Mexican cuisine |
- Tex Miller's | Pure nostalgia (serving Cameron since 1937!) | A legendary burger on a greasy bun with melted Velveeta |
The Staycation Mindset: The secret to a great staycation is treating your hometown like a traveler would. Put your phone on "Do Not Disturb," try a menu item you've never ordered before, and take the time to look up at the historic architecture downtown.
By spending our summer afternoons and entertainment dollars right here in Milam County, we don't just protect our wallets from rising fuel costs—we also pour our support back into the local businesses and neighbors who make our community thrive.
