A Community in Mourning: Cameron Bids a Heartfelt Farewell to Amelia "Millie" Mendoza

CAMERON, TX — The profound impact of a life well-lived was visibly on display Tuesday morning as the Cameron community gathered in massive numbers to pay their final respects to Amelia "Millie" Mendoza.

Services began Tuesday morning at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home, followed by burial services at Hernandez Cemetery off FM 1600. The true scale of Millie’s impact on local hearts became unforgettable as everyone transitioned downtown to Railfan for a luncheon to share a meal and talk about her life.

The entire Cameron Square was filled with visitors, and a long line of law enforcement and sheriff’s vehicles lined the streets outside the downtown venue. Inside and out, crowds gathered to pay their respects and support the Mendoza family—a quiet, powerful testament to the deep respect and love the community held for her.

Millie passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 68, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The sudden loss has reverberated through Milam County, where she was known not just as a familiar face, but as a pillar of kindness, family devotion, and faith.

A Life Rooted in Milam County

Born in Cameron on May 14, 1957, to Cruz and Basilia (Salazar) Reyes, Millie was a lifelong resident and a proud graduate of C.H. Yoe High School. On November 17, 1972, she married Manuel Mendoza Jr., beginning a beautiful journey of family and devotion until his passing in 2009.

For many years, Millie was a staple of the local workforce, serving as a regional manager for CEFCO and later working with Casey’s Convenience Stores. Through her work, her warm smile and generous spirit became a daily touchstone for countless local residents. Beyond her professional life, her faith was a cornerstone of her existence; she was a deeply dedicated member of Primera Iglesia Bautista Church in Cameron.

An Outpouring of Love

The staggering turnout downtown reflected the immense gratitude of a town she gave so much to. In a moving message shared by her son, John J. Mendoza, the family expressed their deep appreciation for the overwhelming wave of community comfort:

"Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks for the overwhelming support, prayers, condolences, calls, messages, food, and kindness shown to us during the unexpected loss of our mother, Ms. Milli. As many of you know, she was an amazing woman, a godly person, and truly an all-around gem to everyone who knew her."

The community luncheon at Railfan served as a fitting gathering place for the hundreds of friends, neighbors, and colleagues who came together to celebrate her memory and swap stories of her warmth and grace.

Millie leaves behind a massive, loving legacy, including her children—John Mendoza of Cameron, Jason Mendoza and his wife Jerrica of Cameron, and Cyndi Mauldin and her husband Britt of Little River-Academy—as well as 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a large, tight-knit extended family of siblings, nieces, and nephews.

In Cameron, Millie Mendoza will be remembered exactly as she lived: a godly woman, a devoted mother and grandmother, and an absolute gem of a human being who left her hometown a brighter, kinder place.
