A Legacy of Scoops and Smiles: Mayfield Dairy Queen Brings History to Life in Cameron

CAMERON, TX — The intersection of 4th and Travis was the place to be this past Saturday as the local Dairy Queen, a cornerstone of the Cameron community, hosted a high-energy "Kids Day" celebration. From 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., the restaurant didn't just serve food—it celebrated a family legacy that has been part of the Texas landscape for over 75 years.

Generational Generosity

The event featured an incredible offer that saw the restaurant buzzing from start to finish: kids ate completely free. Each young guest was treated to their choice of three different kids' meals and, in true DQ fashion, a complimentary ice cream treat to top it off.

The generosity stems from the Mayfield family, third-generation owners who have operated Dairy Queen franchises in Texas since Tolbert Mayfield opened his first location in 1949. Today, the business is overseen by Robert Mayfield and his son Nate, who continue the tradition of treating customers like family.

A Personal Touch from Mr. Mayfield

The afternoon was made even more special by the presence of Robert Mayfield himself. Known for his hands-on approach and commitment to the "Mayfield DQ" brand, Mr. Mayfield spent the afternoon:

Greeting every guest with a warm welcome at the door.

Handing out hugs and high-fives to the children.

Sharing the rich history of the family business with local parents.

"We put a lot of effort into hospitality," Mr. Mayfield has often said of his franchises. "It’s about some fun and some good service—that’s our specialty."

Fun for the Whole Family

The restaurant was alive with color and activity. A professional face painter transformed children into their favorite characters, while the dining room was filled with the sounds of laughter and community connection. The event served as a reminder that even in a fast-paced world, the Mayfield family remains dedicated to the "small-town feel" that has defined their business for seven decades.
