Beat the Heat, Save the Season: What New UIL Rules Mean for Local Athletes and Bands
Beginning August 1, 2026, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) has mandated that every member public school in Texas replace traditional heat index monitoring with strict Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) safety protocols.
Milam County, TX - As Texas heat continues to push midsummer temperatures past triple digits, local student-athletes and marching band members face a major shift in how outdoor practices are conducted. Beginning August 1, 2026, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) has mandated that every member public school in Texas replace traditional heat index monitoring with strict Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) safety protocols.
The mandate applies to all outdoor fall sports—including football, cross country, and tennis—as well as marching band rehearsals.
Why Heat Index Wasn't Enough
For years, schools relied on the standard heat index, which calculates temperature and relative humidity in shaded conditions. WBGT offers a far more accurate reflection of what students experience while practicing under direct sunlight on hot turf, grass, or asphalt.
Unlike heat index, WBGT factors in:
- Direct sunlight & sun angle
- Ambient air temperature & relative humidity
- Wind speed
- Cloud cover
Strict Monitoring Rules on the Field
Under the new UIL directive, school athletic trainers, coaches, and band directors must take WBGT readings using certified handheld devices or localized weather stations:
- Initial Check: Taken within 15 minutes before any outdoor workout or rehearsal begins.
- Ongoing Checks: Repeated at least every 30 minutes throughout the duration of practice.
- Recordkeeping: Schools are required to document and maintain logs of all readings for compliance.
How the Thresholds Work (Class 3 Region Standard)
Central and East Texas high schools operate under **Class 3** WBGT guidelines. As the WBGT reading climbs, mandatory practice adjustments immediately take effect:
- Under 82.0°F | Normal practice; minimum three 3-minute rest/hydration breaks per hour.
- 82.0°F – 86.9°F | Mandatory rest breaks increase to 4 minutes; rapid cooling zone (cold-water immersion tub) required on-site.
- 87.0°F – 89.9°F | Practice time limited to 2 hours max; pads/equipment limited for football; no heavy conditioning drills.
- 90.0°F – 92.0°F | Practice time limited to 1 hour max; no protective equipment or full uniforms allowed; 20 minutes total mandatory rest.
- 92.1°F or Higher | ALL outdoor practices, walkthroughs, and rehearsals are strictly suspended until readings drop.
What Local Programs Are Doing to Adapt
Rather than risk losing practice time to afternoon cancellations, area coaching staff and band directors are shifting schedules:
- Sunrise Practice: Moving workouts to 6:00 AM–7:00 AM slots before solar radiation peaks.
- Night Rehearsals: Shifting marching band drills and football walkthroughs under field lights after sunset.
- Indoor Workouts: Utilizing gymnasiums, weight rooms, and indoor halls for walk-throughs and conditioning when outdoor WBGT triggers red flags.
- Rapid Cooling Stations: Setting up cold-water immersion tubs (or "TACO" tarp cooling setups) directly on the sideline for immediate treatment if a student shows signs of heat distress.
