Milam County Mission Launches "Lend a Hand, Mow a Lawn" Initiative for Local Seniors

CAMERON, TX — The Milam County Mission is calling on local residents, civic organizations, and youth groups to roll up their sleeves this summer for a brand-new community initiative: "Lend a Hand, Mow a Lawn." The program aims to provide free lawn care services to elderly residents, senior citizens, and homebound neighbors across Milam County who are physically unable to maintain their properties. To maximize local impact, the Mission has organized two dedicated community clean-up days, splitting the efforts between Cameron and Rockdale.

"We want to look out for the people who helped build our communities," said event coordinator Jillian Morris. "A overgrown yard can quickly become a safety hazard or a source of stress for a senior neighbor. By coming together for just a few hours, our volunteer teams can make a massive difference in their daily lives."

Two Towns, Two Saturdays of Service

The initiative will kick off in Cameron before expanding to Rockdale two weeks later. Volunteers will gather early to beat the Texas heat, receive their team assignments, and head out into the neighborhoods.

  • Cameron Yard Clean-Up Day: Scheduled for Saturday, June 27th. Volunteers will meet at All Saints Episcopal Church at 7:00 AM for kickoff and property assignments. After a morning of hard work, everyone will gather back at the church at noon for a free celebratory lunch.
  • Rockdale Yard Clean-Up Day: Scheduled for Saturday, July 11th. Volunteers will meet at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 7:00 AM to receive assignments, returning to the church at 12:00 PM for a free volunteer lunch.

How the Community Can Get Involved

The Milam County Mission is looking for support in three distinct ways to ensure the program's success:

  1. Volunteer Muscle & Equipment: The Mission needs individuals, families, youth groups, and civic clubs to form "Strike Teams." Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own lawnmowers, weed eaters, rakes, and safety gear.
  2. Community Sponsors: To offset costs for the volunteers, the Mission is seeking donations of gasoline/gas cards, heavy-duty trimmer line, large lawn trash bags, and bottled water or sports drinks to keep workers hydrated.
  3. Resident Referrals: If you are a senior citizen who needs assistance, or if you know a neighbor who is struggling to maintain their yard due to physical limitations, the Mission wants to hear from you so they can add the property to their service list.

Get in Touch

Organizers stress that safety is a top priority, and services will be limited to basic mowing, edging, and weed eating.
