Mom, I’m Bored!”—The Ultimate Parent’s Guide to a Milam County Summer

Cameron, TX - We’ve all heard it. The school supplies are barely tucked away before that dreaded four-word phrase echoes through the house: "I'm bored! What now?" This summer, don't let the heat—or the boredom—win. From the click-clack of train tracks in Cameron to the cool splash pads of Thorndale, our region is bursting with opportunities for youth engagement and family memories. Next time your kids look at you with that blank stare, you can hand them this guide to a fully inclusive Milam County summer experience.

All Aboard for Education and Adventure

One of the most unique and sought-after offerings this year comes from Old Town Cameron. The Milam County Railroad Museum is hosting its highly anticipated Engineer Camps throughout June, offering a hands-on experience that goes far beyond just watching trains. These camps are specifically designed to teach local youth how to operate the massive museum layout and encourage a deep interest in railroad history.

The season kicks off with the Young Engineer Camp for ages 7 to 9, running from June 1st through the 3rd. These aspiring conductors learn the basics of operation and earn their official Engineer Pin, which grants them the special privilege of operating the museum trains whenever they visit in the future. Older kids ages 10 to 18 can join the Junior Engineer Camp from June 8th to the 12th, where they dive into the technical side of model railroading, including soldering, track laying, and building their own dioramas. For those who have mastered the Junior level, the Master Engineer Camp runs from June 15th to the 19th. The ultimate highlight of these programs is the hallmark Amtrak trip, where campers, along with their parents and siblings, get to experience the thrill of real-world rail travel together.

Dive into Knowledge at the Local Library

When the midday sun reaches its peak, the library becomes the ultimate sanctuary for cool, quiet fun. The Cameron and Rockdale Public Libraries offer much more than just a place to borrow books; they are dynamic hubs of summer activity. Their Summer Reading Programs are meticulously designed to keep young minds sharp during the school break through exciting reading challenges and rewards. Throughout the summer, these libraries host weekly performers, ranging from magicians and puppet shows to science demonstrators, ensuring there is always something new to see. Additionally, interactive craft sessions allow children to express their creativity in the comfort of the air conditioning, making it a perfect destination for those triple-digit afternoons.

Splashing Through the Heat

Nothing beats the Texas heat quite like a day at the pool, and Milam County has several fantastic spots to soak and swim. The Cameron City Pool at 3900 N Fannin Ave. is the community's primary hub for aquatic fun and is set to open for the season in late May. It provides a sprawling space for families to splash, swim, and sunbathe in a supervised environment. For those in the Rockdale area, the Rockdale City Pool at Wolf Park offers public swimming hours as well as morning swim lessons for younger children looking to build their water confidence. Meanwhile, the Thorndale Splash Pad is a fantastic, free option for younger children. Located right in the city park, it offers a quick and easy way for kids to cool off without the commitment of a full pool day.

Game On: Sports and Physical Activity

For kids who need to burn off energy but find the outdoor heat too intense, the O.J. Thomas Alumni Center Gym is a local staple. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the center hosts open gym basketball sessions. These sessions provide a safe, supervised, and—most importantly—indoor court where local youth and community members can stay active and healthy. Beyond the open gym, families should keep an eye on Rockdale and Thorndale ISDs, which host various sports-specific camps for football, basketball, and volleyball throughout the months of June and July. These camps are an excellent way for young athletes to hone their skills and stay connected with their peers during the summer break.

Stay Fueled: The Free Summer Meal Program

You can't have summer fun on an empty stomach, and Cameron ISD is ensuring every child stays fueled up. Their Free Summer Meal Program is a vital resource open to all children ages 1 to 18, as well as students with disabilities up to age 21. There is no registration, income paperwork, or ID required—kids just need to show up and eat. The program typically runs Monday through Thursday during the month of June at Cameron Elementary School and C.H. Yoe High School. Breakfast is served from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM, and lunch follows from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Note that all meals must be consumed on-site in the cafeteria, and adults are often welcome to purchase their own meals at a nominal cost.

A Walk Through Time and Community

For families looking for a bit of educational exploration, Cameron offers several historical detours that are perfect for a morning stroll. Taking your kids to visit the C.H. Yoe Home is a wonderful way to teach them about local history and the figures who shaped our town. You might also consider a visit to the Rice Cemetery, which is beautifully maintained by the Rice Cemetery Foundation. These visits can spark meaningful conversations about our community's roots and the importance of preservation. If you're feeling adventurous, you can also explore the early morning trails at Apache Pass or Wolf Park to see the natural beauty of the San Gabriel River before the afternoon heat sets in.

Giving Back and Getting Creative at Home

Summer is also a great time to teach children the value of giving back to their community. Families can visit the Cameron Shelter to learn about the "Pet of the Week" program. This is a rewarding way for kids to engage with animal welfare and perhaps help a furry friend find a forever home. On those days when it is simply too hot to leave the house, you can transform your living room into a "Beat the Heat" zone. Try a frozen treasure hunt by freezing small toys in ice blocks for the kids to "excavate" with warm water and salt. You can also set up an indoor "drive-in" movie by letting the kids decorate large cardboard boxes as cars. For a tasty local tradition, spend an afternoon in the kitchen teaching the kids how to bake homemade kolaches or simple breads.

Finally, don't forget to mark your calendars for June 26, 2026, for the Milam County 4-H Fri-YAY Day Camp. This program focuses on hands-on learning and outdoor skills that provide a perfect capstone to a busy summer. Whether you are on the court, in the pool, at the library, or exploring local history, Milam County is your playground this summer. Stay cool, stay active, and make this a season your family will never forget!
