Your Weekend Preview Around Milam County

As late August rolls across Central Texas, the hum of school hallways returning to life is met by another beloved local tradition: a community calendar bursting at the seams. From Friday night lights and sizzling barbecue plates to grassroots outreach and live acoustics, Milam County and our neighboring communities have a packed lineup of events designed to bring neighbors together.

Setting the Stage: Friday, August 28

  • Fuel Up for Friday Night Lights: Before heading into the stands, skip cooking dinner and support the upcoming graduating class. The YHS Class of 2027 Senior Celebration is hosting a Game Day Tailgate from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Yoe High Cafeteria. For $10 a plate, you get a pulled pork sandwich, chips, and a drink, available for both dine-in and drive-thru convenience.
  • Yoemen Regular Season Kickoff: High school football officially returns to Cameron as the Yoemen take the field for their season opener against the Teague Lions. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM at home.
  • Downtown Hearne 4th Fridays: If you find yourself heading toward Robertson County to jumpstart the weekend, Downtown Hearne hosts its monthly 4th Friday gathering featuring free vendor spaces, local food, craft booths, and live outdoor music.

A Packed Saturday Across the County: August 29

  • Reaching Souls Through Soles: Beginning bright and early from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, First Baptist Church Cameron (400 W. Main St.) is teaming up with First Blessing to host a special outreach ministry. The event focuses on providing brand-new shoes to local children in need, ensuring area youth step into the school year with confidence.
  • Davilla Health, Safety, & Emergency Preparedness Fair: From 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, head out to the Davilla Community Center (20803 N. FM 487) for a free community-wide preparedness fair. With representatives on hand from local emergency services—including the Milam County Sheriff’s Office, Bartlett VFD, and county emergency management—residents can sign up for free smoke detector installations, receive free health checks, and enjoy pulled pork sandwich plates that directly benefit repairs to the community center.
  • Cameron Youth Football Burger & Sausage Fundraiser: If you are running weekend errands, swing by the Brookshire Brothers parking lot between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Cameron Youth Football will be serving fresh hamburger plates ($15) and sausage wrap plates ($10)—both complete with chips and a drink—to raise vital support for local youth sports.
  • 3G Goat Roping Under the Arena Lights: For some fast-paced Western action, head to the Milam County Youth Expo Center (301 S. Houston Ave.). 3G Goat Roping Productions brings a full evening of competition, complete with Daisy Dukes BBQ on site. Books open at 7:00 PM with the 12-and-under round-robin getting underway at 7:30 PM, leading into open roping action with prize packages on the line.
  • Regional Road Trip—Divorced Dad Rock Concert: For those looking to take a quick drive over to the Wilco Expo Center in Taylor, Sun Kissed Sips is presenting a full evening of throwback arena rock anthems starting at 5:00 PM, complete with food trucks and beer tents.

Looking Ahead into Next Week

  • Cameron 4-H Welcome Back Meeting (Tuesday, Sept. 1): Cameron 4-H invites youth and families to kick off the new program year at 6:00 PM in the Yoe High Cafeteria. Members are asked to bring items to support this month's service project benefiting Milam Touch of Love.
  • Live Under the Lights with Thomas Simcoe (Tuesday, Sept. 1): Wind down your Tuesday evening in Rockdale with an unplugged, acoustic performance by Thomas Simcoe at Moonbrew Coffee House from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This all-ages performance offers the perfect cozy atmosphere for coffee lovers and live music fans alike.
  • Yoemen Football on the Road (Thursday, Sept. 3): Take note of an adjusted schedule next week: the Yoemen will play on Thursday night, traveling to Waco ISD Stadium to battle Whitney at 7:00 PM.
